Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway

Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway is Minnesota's northernmost scenic drive which travels from Voyagers National Park, along the Canadian border to the North Dakota border.  The byway provides plenty of recreational activities for anglers, boaters, bird and wildflower watchers.  As the route name suggests, this northern byway offers nighttime visitors an excellent chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis, better know as the Northern Lights.

Driving Directions

Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway travels on three roads:  

  • State/Trunk Highway 11 (from Dove Island to Karlstad)
  • U.S. Highway 59 (from the communities of Halma and Lake Bronson to TH 175)
  • State/Trunk Highway 175 (From U.S. 59 to the North Dakota border).

Highlights and Key Points Along the Route

The byway route traverses several cities, small towns, forests, farmland, and the Rainy River.  At the eastern end of the route is the Voyageurs National Park, which is a series of near-wilderness lakes best explored by boat.  The Voyageurs Lakes, Rainy River, Lake of the Woods are all popular fishing waters that are home to numerous area resorts.  Sports fans can visit the Bronko Nagurski Museum in International Falls and Warroad, which is considered "Hockeytown USA" .  

Other key points along the route include the state's largest Indian burial mound in Grand Mound, the Giant Willie Walleye statue in Baudette, Zippel Bay State Park on Lake of the Woods, and the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail that includes several nearby bird-watching sites.  Lake Bronson State Park is also a great place to see moose and other wildlife too.
