Pumpkin Mania is a yearly event that celebrates the friendly competition of who can grow the biggest pumpkin in the Thunder Bay area.
Thunder Bay District Giant Pumpkin Growers associated with the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth have hosted a one-day event to showcase weigh-offs of these giant gourdes for the past eight years. The local pumpkin group moved Pumpkin Mania to Belluz Farms in 2016 after seven years of hosting the event at the Murillo Fair Grounds in association with the Oliver Agricultural Society.
Belluz Farms, a family business that has been running since 1946, proved to be a perfect setting for the what was a fun day for all ages. There was live entertainment, a petting zoo, pumpkin decorating, pumpkin carving, a giant straw maze, wagon tour rides, great food and plenty of fresh fall vegetables.
A couple of pumpkin drops added to the fascination of seeing some of the large, locally-grown, orange monsters up close and personal. A giant pumpkin filled with candy was dropped or kids to scavange and enjoy with the big "wow" coming with the finale of a 1038 pound pumpkin smashing a car. The car crushing was a fundraiser for the Thunder Bay Alzheimer's Society.
With the giant success of the first Pumpkin Mania at Belluz Farms plans are already underway to make next years event even more spectacular.
