Wooden boats to moose-hide mukluks, wood-fired breads to timber frame saunas - the legacy, beauty and stories of traditional northern crafts are the hallmark of North House Folk School. Created as an educational nonprofit in 1997, North House has quickly emerged as a dynamic national destination for life-long and hands-on learning.
North House hosts over 400 courses that feature the collective talent of 150+ regional artisan instructors, in a typical year. In 2013, students arrived from 35 states and 5 foreign countries. In this high-tech and low-touch world, North House offers an important and engaging alternative - high-touch and low-tech. Classes are quite literally about the age-old joy of grabbing onto life with both hands, creating things of beauty and utility.
North House's mission is elemental and powerful - "Enrich lives and build community through the teaching of traditional northern crafts in a student-center learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind."
North House's array of educational offerings take place in every month of the year. The core of the school's educational offering are its catalog courses which attract adults and families for workshops that vary in length from 1/2 day to 5 days, with longer immersion projects extending up to two weeks. Custom courses for colleges, high schools and other groups are also available.
Three major seasonal events take place each year and are open to the public:
** Wooden Boat Show & Summer Solstice Festival (June)
** Unplugged (September)
** Winterer's Gathering & Arctic Film Festival (November)
In addition, North House host multiple thematic weekend events that explore core themes of North House's craft
** Northern Fiber Retreat (Feb)
** Woodcarvers Week (March)
** Northern Sustainability Symposium (May)
** Northern Landscapes Festival (early June)
** Family & Intergenerational Learning Weekend (Oct)
North House offers campus tours, summer sailing on their steel-hulled schooner, facility rentals, on-campus crafts demonstrations and more, with offering varying by season.
