Ted and Fern Monson of Ohio welcomed hundreds of guest to Hoist Bay Resort from 1939 to 1973. They built the resort on the site of the Virginia & Rainy Lake Lumber Company’s Camp #75. From 1913 – 1929, this logging conglomerate transported timber from surrounding forests and hauled it by rail from Hoist Bay to their sawmill in Virginia, Minnesota. Voyageurs National Park has preserved key building from Monson’s Resort and landscape features from the logging period.
