Northwind Lodge on Jasper Lake - Ely MN

Northwind Lodge is a wilderness family vacation resort with housekeeping cabins on a pretty lake called Jasper.  We are entering out 70th year of continuous operation under the same family ownership and now third generation operators.  Unique to the resort setting is beautiful Jasper Creek as if flows through the lodge property serving as gem of a sound barrier.  Northwind Lodge has remained a simple ma & pa resort with comfortable cabins and a laid back atmosphere in wilderness setting.  We offer full amenities, easy access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness plus excellent fishing in Jasper and surrounding waters.

Northwind Lodge has a yearly guest return rate of  90% so it can be difficult getting into cabins at some times in the summer.  We recommend you consider earlier and later seasons for excellent fishing, cooler weather, and even fewer people to the area.

Driving Directions

Eco-Friendly Notes

Northwind Lodge is an eco-friendly resort.  We recycle glass, metal and cardboard, we reuse what we can, we don't burn piles of old tires, nor do we dump used motor oil in the water.  We don't compost because bears like that.  We encourage our cabin guests to shut off lights when not using them and to not heat the outside with the cabin's heat on and the windows wide open.  We do not cut down all the brush as the resort for an unfettered view of the lake.  Unlike many others who come to the northwoods and build large homes with a big manicured  lawn in front so they can see and be seen, we prefer to NOT stick out on the lake.  Passing by on the water, one would be hard pressed to know there is a resort here.  This is not so much from an "eco" standpoint as it is from our strong hunting/fishing/outdoors background having lived here all of our lives.

Locally or Family-Owned Business Notes

In 1939, grandfather Frank Baltich built a trapping shack on the southern shore of Jasper Lake and from there the resort grew being licensed in 1944 with Joe Baltich, Sr. operating it while Frank was out guiding.  Cabins were added over the following years by Frank and his sons.  Joe, Sr. and wife Paula operated the resort for many years.   Now the operation is run by Joe Baltich, Jr. and wife Annette with the addition of Red Rock Wilderness Store, the retail division of the business.

Pet Friendly Notes

Pets are allowed for an additional charge. Must be nice pets and good pet owners. Limited to one dog per party.
